We Won!

Profiles are here to stay. The petitions, blog entries, news articles, email complaints, phone complaints, comments on Slashdot, Digg, Reddit, and NetFlix’s own dev blog worked. NetFlix despite telling us this was a “final decision” has reconsidered driving thousands of customers to their competitors and making thousands more dissatisfied. Thank you everyone who joined the protest like I did.

WTF Netflix?

From an email I just recieved from netflix:

Dear Paul,

We wanted to let you know we will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account, effective September 1, 2008.

Each additional Profile Queue will be unavailable after September 1, 2008. Before then, we recommend you consolidate any of your Profile Queues to your main account Queue or print them out.

While it may be disappointing to see Profiles go away, this change will help us continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers.

If you have any questions, please go to http://www.netflix.com/Help?p_faqid=3962 or call us anytime at 1 (888) 638-3549. We apologize for any inconvenience.

- The Netflix Team

My wife and I currently have 3 profiles. One for her movies, one for mine, and a third for ones we both want to see. Her list is filled with crime drama and chick flicks. Mine with Anime, SciFi, Documentaries, Foreign and Independent Films. The shared one has Comedies and Action films we both want to see. Netflix’s change means that not only can we not control easily the split of one of mine, one of hers, and a shared one being at home, but it will completely break the recommendations for each of us independently as they will be merged into one profile. I called Netflix to complain and they said the reason they are getting rid of the profiles is they are rolling out new features on the website and the software engineers were unable to resolve bugs regarding the interaction of multiple profiles with the new features.

Jesus probably rode dinosaurs.

Well I’m convinced….
