a shrine of insignificance

This week Oprah has the arch-scientologist and loony himself, Tom Cruise, on for two entire episodes. Beside the fact that her "interview" is nothing but a mess of apologetics, double-talk, and outright lies to make Cruise seem sane and scientology less cultish, there is a more fundamental issue. The whole stunt is being done under the guise of celebrating Cruise's 25th year in "the business". Oddly enough a simple check on imdb shows that Cruise's first film in 1981, not 1983. True he became a star thinks to Risky Business (1983), but he had been in two filims prior to that in supporting roles. I'm not sure if this is a sin of incompetence or just down right dishonesty by Oprah. But clearly Cruise has been in "the business" for 27 years now.
