camping at the beach

This weekend Dorre and I packed up our minivan and dragged the dogs along for a weekend at the Beach. We drove the five hours to North Padre Island paid for a camp site and went down to the beach. Those crazy pups saw the water and were so excited… until the first wave hit them. They freaked. We pulled them back into the water with us, and they settled until they were submerged by a wave. We kept trying, but cranberry got tangled on her leash swallowed some water and went into a panic. At that point we left the water and went back to set up our tent. Between the burrs in the ground and the high winds, the tent set up was a pain in the ass that made both Dorre and I decide that we never wanted to camp that close to the water again. I then went to the store and bought the ingrediants to “Girl Scout Stew”, which Dorre cooked up. After dinner, we and the pups went for an hour long walk along the beach. The puppies played with the crabs that were out scavaging along the beach. And then the four of us went back to go to sleep in the tent. The wind began to blow even harder, and me and Dorre barely got any sleep, but the puppies slept like logs. The next morning we took another walk along the beach then packed up our minivan and drove back home. It was good to get out of town and to get to play at the beach. But it is so much better to be able to sleep in my real bed. Next time we go to the beach, we are going to go somewhere that we can get to and back in the same day.
